On January 12, 2009, the CLC met with representatives from the Wayne County chamber of commerce to share knowledge about beginning a literacy council. At the end of the 12th round, Alicia Hillard correctly spelled the word "shrieval," then the remaining member of the last opposing team incorrectly spelled the word "jacamar." When the 13th round began with only one team remaining, they were proclaimed the winners. This is the third year in a row that Croatan High School BETA Club won the Carteret Literacy Council's Annual Business Spelling Bee.
