The Carteret Literacy Council: A Short History
1983 - The adult services librarian at the Carteret Public Library and three other volunteers received training in the Laubach Way to Reading Series.
1984 - The Carteret Literacy Council was founded, the first student was accepted into the program, and that same year, the first tutor training included 70 volunteers!
1985 - The Council elected its first Board Members at its first official organizational meeting. In March, Laubach granted the Council its affiliation certificate.
1988 - The Carteret Literacy Council was incorporated as a nonprofit organization.
1990 - The Council's first English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) tutor and first ESL tutor training.
1989 - The "Little Literacy" program provided books to each newborn at the Carteret General Hospital - this was resumed in 2002 as "Bringing Books to Babies".
1989 - A group of Literacy Council members began reading at Head Start classes.
2005 - The Council celebrated its 20th Anniversary!
2009 - At the annual Recognition Dinner, the Council presented awards to its 146th Senior Tutor (over 40 tutoring hours), 61st Advanced Tutor (over 150 tutoring hours), and 29th Master Tutor (over 300 tutoring hours).
